(Spoiler alert: Yes, you definitely should.)
We tend to think of our washing machines as self-cleaning superheroes—they wash everything else, after all! But over time, detergent buildup, fabric softener, hard water, and grime from dirty laundry can cause mildew, odours, and even stains on your clothes. So yes, your washing machine needs a good clean once in a while—and we’ll show you exactly how to do it.
WHY BOTHER CLEANING IT?
Over time, your washer can start to smell musty, leave residue on your clothes, or just not work as efficiently as it used to. That’s because:
- Soap scum and minerals build up in the drum
- Moisture breeds bacteria and mould
- Lint and debris can clog important parts
The good news? A quick clean every month or two can keep things fresh, efficient, and odour-free.
HOW TO CLEAN A FRONT-LOAD WASHER
Front-load washers are great for water efficiency, but they’re also known for getting a little smelly if not cleaned regularly.
Step 1: Wipe the Gasket
Use a damp cloth with a little vinegar or mild cleaner to wipe down the rubber gasket around the door. This area traps moisture and gunk—don’t skip it!
Step 2: Clean the Dispenser Tray
Remove the detergent drawer and rinse it under warm water. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away buildup in the nooks and crannies.
Step 3: Run a Cleaning Cycle
Run an empty hot water cycle with 2 cups of white vinegar in the drum. For extra power, add ½ cup of baking soda to the detergent tray.
Step 4: Leave the Door Open
After the cycle finishes, wipe down the drum and leave the door open to let everything dry out.
HOW TO CLEAN A TOP-LOAD WASHER
Step 1: Fill with Hot Water
Set your washer to the largest, hottest setting and fill it up.
Step 2: Add Cleaning Agents
Pour in 4 cups of white vinegar, then let the machine agitate for 1 minute and pause it. Let it sit for 1 hour.
Step 3: Scrub Inside
While it soaks, dip a sponge or toothbrush into the water and scrub the agitator, lid, and sides of the machine.
Step 4: Finish the Cycle
After scrubbing, close the lid and let the cycle finish.
Step 5: Run a Second Cycle (Optional)
To finish, you can run one more empty cycle with 1 cup of baking soda to neutralize odours.
WHEN TO CLEAN IT
Ideally? Once a month. If that feels like too much, aim for every 2–3 months, especially if you:
- Wash a lot of athletic gear or heavily soiled items
- Use fabric softener regularly
- Live in a hard water area
