Remove red wine stains - tidybirdcleaning

Because wine belongs in a glass, not on your couch.

Red wine spills are a classic panic moment—especially on light fabrics or carpet. Whether it’s on your shirt, your sofa, or the rug, don’t stress. With the right steps (and a little speed), you can totally save the day. Let’s break down how to remove red wine stains fast and effectively.

ACT FAST – BLOT, DON’T RUB

First, gently blot the stain using a clean cloth or paper towel. Don’t rub—it’ll only push the wine deeper into the fabric and spread the stain. The goal is to absorb as much of it as possible before treating the red wine stain.

REACH FOR THE SALT

If you’re dealing with a fresh spill, cover it with a generous amount of salt. It helps soak up the moisture and draws out the pigment. Let it sit for a few minutes before brushing or vacuuming it away to help remove red wine stains.

TRY THE SOAP + HYDROGEN PEROXIDE MIX

This is a go-to trick for washable fabrics (always spot test first).

  • Mix 1 part dish soap with 2 parts hydrogen peroxide
  • Apply it directly to the stain to remove red wine stains
  • Let it sit for 10–15 minutes
  • Blot again, then rinse with cold water
  • Launder as usual

This method works wonders on clothes, table linens, and other washable textiles.

WHITE VINEGAR + BAKING SODA

No peroxide on hand? No problem.

  • Pour white vinegar directly onto the stain
  • Sprinkle baking soda on top
  • Let it fizz and sit for a few minutes
  • Blot, rinse with cold water, and repeat if needed

FOR CARPET OR UPHOLSTERY

You can’t toss your couch in the washing machine, but here’s what to do:

  • Blot the area (as always)
  • Mix a few drops of dish soap with cold water
  • Dab with a sponge or cloth to remove the red wine stains
  • Rinse with clean water and blot dry

Avoid soaking the fabric—too much water can leave marks or damage padding underneath.

OLD OR DRIED STAINS?

You’ll need a little patience. Apply the soap + peroxide mixture and let it soak longer—up to 30 minutes to remove the red wine stains. Repeat if needed before washing. Sometimes it takes two rounds, but it’s worth it.
